Human Wisdom for Artificial Intelligence

Part 2 — AI Can Give Us Answers. Can It Give Us Truth?

We are living through an explosion of information. Artificial intelligence can summarize arguments, analyze data, explain complex ideas, compare perspectives, and produce polished answers in seconds. That is useful and, at times, astonishing. But the speed and fluency of AI can also tempt us into confusing information with knowledge, and knowledge with wisdom.

Carbajo-Núñez’s Brother Robot repeatedly returns to this concern. The notes I gathered from the book distinguish technical or rational knowledge from the richer human work of discernment. Truth is not merely what can be quantified. Human understanding also involves critical thought, moral responsibility, dialogue, lived experience, tradition, relationship, and contemplation.

This matters because an AI system can produce a factual answer without understanding why that answer matters. It can assemble evidence, but it cannot by itself determine what deserves our loyalty. It can predict behavior, but prediction is not the same as moral judgment. It can optimize a process, but optimization cannot tell us what a human life is for.

Project Sapier therefore asks organizations to examine the environment of knowing that AI creates. Are people becoming more thoughtful or more dependent? Are AI-generated conclusions open to challenge? Are employees strengthening judgment, or are they quietly outsourcing it?

In an age of abundant answers, the rarest skill may become the ability to ask a wise question.
